Scientists are working on a new type of cultivating a marine plant that is rich in nutrients. In fact, it has more nutrients than green super-food kale. Even better is its taste. It has the same taste as bacon. Palmaria palmate (dulse) has been used in making bacon-flavored salad dressing and bacon-flavored crackers. This type of red algae grows in Atlantic coastlines and in northern parts of the Pacific.
According to the OSU (Oregon State University), dulse is harvested in the nature and then dried out. It is sold for $90 per a pound. They are working on making this algae more affordable. They managed to make certain systems in order to cultivate the algae without any soil. At the moment, they are able to produce between 9 and 14 kilograms of this algae in two water tanks located at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. According to Chris Langdon, a professor at the OSU, they can increase the production up to 45 kilograms per week. They have been growing dulse more than 15 years.
The dulse is an excellent way of proteins, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. This means that this type of food is very rich in nutrients. In order to have a healthy life, we need them. However, the biggest problem is growing more of this food. In order to grow, dulse uses the water recirculation system. This means that it isn’t very cheap to make. Researchers are currently working on finding new ways and making growing of dulse more efficient.
This food is healthy and it has the same taste as a bacon. This means that it will be eaten by many people.
